Differences between D20 and D6?

Thu Feb 12, 2009 4:21 pm

Since we seem to be switching between both, I and I guess others, could use some help with the D20 system...

How similar is it to D6?
What are the differences?
What is the same?

Just a short brief would help.

Thanks...invincibleILeak

It's a lot like playing Knights of the old republic. The skills are pretty much like in the game.

The difference between d6 and d20 is that a 20 sided die plus modifiers determines if an action succeeds or fails. Character creation looks a bit different, but has the same information.

I haven't really used it yet, BUT I plan to in the very near future.

Think of it as a distant cousin to D&D and you'll be in the ballpark.

I've been trying to wrap my head around the D20 system after submitting a PC for Jeremy H.'s KoTOR era game. So far what I've figured out so far....

Differences:
D6: Uses CPs for improvements, non-class based.
D20: Uses levels for improvements, class based, feats.

Similarities:
D6: Attributes (Str, Dex, Per, Mech, Tech, Know), roll against a difficulty number.
D20: Attributes (Str, Dex, Con, Wis, Int, Char), roll against a difficulty number.

I'm sure the list can go on between the similarities and differences of each systems for those who the the D20 far better than I do.

The D6 is still going to be around. There are a lot of players who have invested a great deal of time and effort into their characters during the classic time line and wanted to still use them so this time frame will remain in place. This also leaves it open for someone who wants to start a D6 game that diverges from the classic timeline or even another era if they want to do so.

I actually prefer the sound of D20 to D6 (which took me a while to get my head round.)

D20 sounds more like video games around now, like Oblivion or Fallout 3, so I'll probably try making a character in that format in the near future.

Thanks for the help.

D20 was used for the KoTOR and Neverwinter Nights games. Elder Scrolls has always had it's own system which hearkens back to the first three games although there have been some changes in between them like skills being replaced or dropped. Fallout uses the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system which goes all the way back to Fallout 1 and 2.

I think D20 would be the best among all the application. Actually I really like to make some different characters with the D20. D6 is also nice but I really like to make it with the D20.
